"You remind me of my Dad"

December 15th 2007 03:11
There was a time when even the most confident of men would have been unnerved by this sentence, but today it seems that women are more like their mothers than they would care to admit: research has repeatedly shown that women are most attracted to men who remind them of their fathers. They say it’s not an Oedipus thing but a matter of comfort, protection and familiarity.

According to livescience.com, “Women who got along well with their dads as kids are attracted to men who resemble their fathers, whereas women who had a bad father-daughter relationship do not.” With the majority of girls having a close and healthy relationship with their fathers, odds are on that your chosen lady will feel more connected to you if you remind her of Dad, not only in physical appearance, but in odour and choice of profession too.

Odour? Yes, you read that right. In a t-shirt sniffing experiment conducted several years ago, it was found that women repeatedly and unwittingly preferred the scent of men who not only had a genetic makeup different to their own, but one where the genes thought to be tightly linked to personal odour were similar to those of their fathers. Science still has a lot to answer for when it comes to the natural laws of attraction, but new advances are being made on a steady basis.

Women may not be as visual as men when it comes to attraction, but appearance is still a significant factor when it comes to women being drawn to father-types. Whether you’re tall and lean or heavily built, if her Dad looks like you you’ll stand a better chance of making her your girlfriend. She probably has her mother’s taste after all, and that includes her taste in men.

But the real question is, how can you use this knowledge to your advantage? Unless you already know him through work or otherwise, there’s no way of knowing what your target’s father looks like, let alone what he smells like! The way to find out is to ask subtle questions. Ask her what her father does for a living (she won’t be offended, trust me). Whether his job is white or blue-collar will give you some indication of the type of man she feels most comfortable with. If she seems happy talking about her Dad, you’ll know that her relationship with him is a good one and that she falls into the majority of girls. Tread lightly though if she’s overly enthralled by him, as Daddy’s Girls have a tendency of being high-maintenance. Remember, you’re learning more about her with every conversation you have, and you might discover that she’s not who you thought she was. Don’t ever get sucked into infatuation!

Essentially, if you feel that your girl might be attracted to father-types, you just have to be yourself, but a stronger, more confident version. If you can make her feel comfortable and happy around you, you’re halfway there. Best of luck to you!

On the other hand, you reach the age where that's the LAST thing you want to hear!
