Will your religion affect your relationship?

February 21st 2008 03:31
Religion can be a sticky subject at the best of times, but what if the person you’re interested in has entirely different beliefs to your own? It’s impossible to know at first whether someone is religious or not, because unless you’re at church it’s not the sort of thing that pops up in everyday conversation. But if you’re dating someone, or are in a new relationship, the topic will come up eventually. How you handle it is up to you.

A rather permanent way of showing your faith

If you have strong religious beliefs and your other half is strongly atheist – or of an entirely different faith - then you will run into problems with arguments arising from the subject. Each party will start to wonder why the other can’t see their point of view. For some, their religion is not important to them, and they are willing to compromise on it in order to keep the peace within the relationship. But for those who would do anything for their God, it can become a real issue. Some religions don't consider marriage official unless both parties are of the same faith, so you may also begin to wonder about the future of your relationship.

This is a call out to anyone who has had experiences dealing with a clash of religion in their relationship – how did it affect your partnership? Was it a non-issue, or something that came up time and time again? Would you actively seek out someone of your own faith only?

It's not hard at all, often it will come up in that first conversation, unless you just simply don't bother talking. Generally it comes up fairly early and you can always steer the conversation that way.

In the long run it can be very important especially when children come along or initially, when you first meet the family.

I have always made a point of steering away from those with different religions, especially if it is a critical one. Often the two will never meet when it comes to different points of view.

Good luck.
