The Alpha Male
January 25th 2008 01:11
We all know an Alpha male type. Whether he’s mysterious and challenging, or cocky and funny, he’s a hit with the ladies and men want to be his friend. We probably also know of a guy who’s trying to be an Alpha male, but he just can’t quite pull it off. We know he’s nothing more than a creation of the Internet generation – someone who’s read too many Dr Love books perhaps – and he tries as hard as he can to pull off the Alpha male act in front of women, but because it doesn’t come naturally to him, he fails.
The point is, trying to carry off a permanent Alpha male persona is not only more difficult than it’s worth, it’s actually dishonest in the eyes of a woman. We want men who are comfortable being themselves, without having to resort to drastic measures like altering their personality because a website somewhere said that they were a ‘beta’ male. Sure, we want men with Alpha qualities (the Greek’s getting a bit silly now, isn’t it?)… emotional and physical strength, an open and inquiring mind, and so on, but we don’t want you to stray from your own personality. It’s what attracted us to you in the first place.
If you want to read more about being the Alpha male, go ahead – it’s all there on the Internet for both you and curious women to read. But think twice before taking on a persona that is entirely different from your natural one. Most women are very intuitive and will pick up on any falseness in your behaviour, so, in my humble Aussie opinion, being yourself is the only way to go.

Ouch!
It's so often true - but ouch anyway.
Journeywoman - agree with you as far as being yourself goes.
But it swings both ways - just check out all those power spectacle wearers - carrying attitude and high heels that frequent offices, clubs and pubs these days.

Damo - point taken.
Mr Nice Guy, yes you're right about that, I didn't think of it that way. Cheers for the comment.
Raven - 'a gender pain in the ass', I might have to steal that line, though I'll make it 'arse'. I always appreciate your comments!
Cibbuano - yes you're so right. It's too much sometimes. What they don't realise is that they're actually intimidating the women there, rather than attracting them, and if they're not being intimidating they're being annoying with their attempts at 'cocky funny' humour. Though it can be funny to watch, I must say!
