Australian Chick - by Journeywoman

Slut? There's no such thing

September 23rd 2008 02:59
How I wish that the above statement were true, and in twenty years, it probably will be - but in 2008 women and men are still stuck in the double standards of sex. A man may get all the action he likes whereas women who have sex with a large number of partners are labelled whores - or at the very least, less moral than the girls who keep their legs together. As far as society in Sydney goes (and I'd like to think us Aussies are very liberal in their views), women who sleep around/aggressively pursue sex parters/have had many boyfriends are still viewed in a negative light.

This beautiful picture of Miley Cyrus, taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, has been deemed 'slutty'. How sad.

urbandictionary.com defines the word 'slut' as being "a woman with the morals of a man". This is, in my opinion, so entirely true. I've never been called a slut (not to my face at least) but if ever I am, I intend to laugh at the guy and accuse him of living in the past. Or if it's a girl, I'll let her know, very politely of course, that if she is calling me a slut then she is oppressing her own gender. We're too far into the 21st century to be condemning people based upon their sexual reputation. And since when did sex become such a dirty thing?

What do you think?

I think that, although most people generally are referring to women exclusively when they use the word "slut," it's a very interesting conclusion to jump to. Personally, I use the word regardless of sex--or actually, to be more accurate, I call "everybody" a "whore" just like I will use "bitch" in reference to both men and women without much thought to sex. I also understand what you mean by your response that a woman is oppressing other women with "slut." I just...don't know if I believe that using derogatory terms against someone who is from the same group as you (or not, even) is oppressive, especially if in the person's case the term is accurate. I don't know if words/name-calling, regardless of historical meaning, oppress people, basically.

i never understood the fuss over that Miley Cyrus photo, its a picture or her back and arm, im sure she would wear more exposing gowns on the red carpet at awards nights

i think it had more to do with who she is - the poster girl for sanitised clean-cut america - the mere suggestion that she may have a sexuality or any potential sexuality suddenly made her a bad role model for the mickey mouse set

one day we will stop lying to our kids about basic human nature . . .

This is great work, and I love what Morgan said

one day we will stop lying to our kids about basic human nature . . .

I made a comment on a censorship post once - the issue is not the kids reading it, its the parents who are too embarassed to explain it.

I was raised Catholic. Oh the horror.

But I LOVE that definition of slut....I am going to pandy that term around a lot more now! Ive been called a slut many many times, just for my behavoiur, which is the exact definition of the word, as it turns out!
